You have probably been in meetings where colleagues have had a heated discussion, or even a serious difference of opinion, about the business ‘numbers’ – only to find that each person is working from a different set of figures; instead of a commonly shared perspective. This usually happens when people are not singing off the same spreadsheet, which can be extremely confusing. But not as dangerous as the widespread use of informal ’systems’ to support decision-making.

Proverbially speaking: slow and steady wins the race. We may also marry in haste and repent at leisure. But these timeless lessons are quickly forgotten, when we rush headlong into iT – desperate for our latest fix of technology. We might take a passing interest in gathering ‘user’ requirements but we are usually far less bothered about making sure we understand them properly.
