You have probably been in meetings where colleagues have had a heated discussion, or even a serious difference of opinion, about the business ‘numbers’ – only to find that each person is working from a different set of numbers; instead of a commonly shared perspective. This usually happens when people are not singing off the same spreadsheet, which can be extremely confusing. But not as dangerous as the widespread use of informal ’systems’ to support decision-making.
